Meet our Partner: Ongoing collaboration in the field of education between Malta and Finland

Over the last three years over 600 Maltese educators have been trained on Finnish Education, Pedagogy and Finnish educational tools during seminars held in Malta. This happened thanks to Dr Kenneth Vella, Head of Mater Boni Consilii St Joseph Paola and who has Finland and his country so at heart. Dr Vella arranged these forums for professional development of teachers and exchanging of best practices among Finnish education professionals and Maltese teachers.

Apart from this, in collaboration with Learning Scoop Finland over 60 educators have already taken part in various educational experiences in Tampere. This by visiting Finnish schools and attending lectures at the premises of University of Tampere. It is expected that around 60 other Maltese educators will be travelling to Tampere to have a similar educational experience.

Also during the past months, workshops on the Finnish educational tools as LessonApp were also held in Malta. In fact Maltese educators were among the very first ones to get in touch with LessonApp, a mobile tool for teachers. The Premium version of LessonApp was launched in Malta in 2019 and currently over 500 Maltese teachers are using LessonApp while conducting lessons in their respective schools. Through the use of LessonApp, the Maltese teachers are getting fresh ideas for their lessons for better learning and help with their everyday workload.

These are great examples of collaboration and can-do attitude between Malta and Finland. It has been our pure joy and privilege to collaborate with Dr Kenneth Vella in these initiatives. This collaboration between us eventually led also to the establishing of more contacts between Dr Vella and other Finnish entities.

Meanwhile special thanks goes also to the former Minister of Education and Employment and present Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon Evarist Bartolo for supporting Dr Vella and us in these ongoing ventures.

  • Press release: RESOLVING THE LEARNING CRISIS WITH THE HELP OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY

Press release (free to share on Feb 16th 2019)
RESOLVING THE LEARNING CRISIS WITH THE HELP OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY

Global education is in crisis. Majority of children do go to school, but the learning results are poor. Teachers in many countries are lacking quality teacher training.

“The reality struck us when we were travelling in emerging countries to train teachers. Many of the teachers we met were doing their best, but they didn’t have the resources or skills to develop their teaching competence,” Ellimaija Ahonen, Co-Founder and CEO of LessonApp says.

“During this era of unlimited flow of information and efficient communication technology, how is it possible, that we cannot offer basic pedagogical knowledge and tools for every teacher around the world?” Johanna Järvinen-Taubert, teacher trainer and Co-Founder of LessonApp questions. “Coming from Finland, a land of excellent learning results and a strong ethos of equality, this seemed fundamentally unfair to us.”

To tackle this challenge, a mobile lesson planning tool for teachers called LessonApp was developed. Our group of Finnish pedagogical experts, teacher trainers and software designers believes that teachers are the game changers in the field of education, and we want to empower them.

Team LessonApp aims to equip teachers with the understanding of the learning process and, with the tools provided by the app, to help teachers plan efficient and inspiring lessons themselves. The ultimate purpose is to offer quality education for all children and increase the joy of learning in classrooms – for both students and teachers.

“We guarantee that everyone gets the basic version free of charge – with no time limitations. That is our contribution to solving the education crisis and sharing the good that we have. As actions speak louder than words, it is time to make a big impact with digitalization,” says CEO Ellimaija Ahonen.

LessonApp Premium was launched on Saturday 16th February 2019 in Malta. “This pioneer collaboration with Ministry for Education of Malta provides every primary teacher an access to LessonApp Premium. We are very happy about this as well as looking forward to hearing the results and feedback,” Johanna Järvinen-Taubert summarizes.

Finland is renowned for its education excellence, efficiency and top learning results. “During the Finnish teacher training, teacher students are taught different options and possibilities for designing lessons in a pedagogically productive way. We gathered all the knowledge we have related to learning and activating teaching methods, and packed the data into an easy-access format for mobile phones,” team LessonApp sums up.

LessonApp is available in PlayStore, AppStore and www.lessonapp.fi/download
